When I am working with any board material that has holes, I insert the component leads through the holes and then wrap them with the appropriate sized buss wire. Here are photos of the top and bottom of the "Cherry Bomb" amp where you can see that technique. The wire layout is similar to what you would have with a PC board, but is much more flexible than a PC board.

If I were doing crossover boards where I expected to make changes, I would use Waygo connectors.

I use Goop to attach them securely to a board and simply insert the wires. I find them really useful for creating a ground bus and other arrangements where multiple wires come together and I expect to make changes. To make a change, simply flip the appropriate lever and remove the wire to the component and replace with the wire to the different component.

Kind of hard to do with 14ga solid wire

They handle 10 - 26 awg, both stranded and solid.
