And unless you're using a strain gauge cartridge, the magnetic fields from the suspension have got to affect the cartridge...

I was thinking that magnetic fields effect the cartridge.

Why would anyone introduce a magnetic field near a cartridge?

If the cartridge is a moving coil and the magnetic field is configured as to not be time varying at the cartridge there would not be problem. A dc magnetic field would mess up a variable reluctance cartridge. You can configure the magnetic field to be static while the platter rotates by making it cylindrically symmetric. It still wouldn't be worth the effort. My question is still is a laser "cartridge" better than a mechanical one.
