Imagine keeping that platter centered with respect to the arm.

Well I have not ordered one yet.
Does anyone know this reviewer?
Did get to keep it for a good review?

I was thinking that magnetic fields effect the cartridge.

BAAAD Idea!!
Why would anyone introduce a magnetic field near a cartridge?

If the cartridge is a moving coil and the magnetic field is configured as to not be time varying at the cartridge there would not be problem. A dc magnetic field would mess up a variable reluctance cartridge. You can configure the magnetic field to be static while the platter rotates by making it cylindrically symmetric. It still wouldn't be worth the effort. My question is still is a laser "cartridge" better than a mechanical one.

Magnetic fields can be very musical.

If you look back we went through the same discussion when the Mag-Lev was introduced over a year ago
