Another way to insure stability is to have cylindrical spacers the length of distance between the shelves fit over the threaded rod (then 1/2 inch is fine and get the ordinary steel rod at Home Depot). The cylindrical spacers could be thick walled 2 inch pvc pipe (Home Depot again, sand off any lettering). You just need a way of making sure the end cuts are square. Not adjustable, but pvc pipe is cheap.

I built this years ago when the flexi was the big thingy on the web
I used 3/4 threaded rod from homeDepot and covered with black wiring harness stuff from auto store
when you put a bolt both on top and bottom of shelves an tighten down its very stable. I grounded points on the bottom of the rods.
Shelves are MDF hollowed out and filled with lead shot. Yes I am nuts!!!!

"MASS LOADING", It works for speakers too, but has to be done a littler more judicicially.

This is zinc coated but much cheaper. I needed more length so I used a coupler and added around 4 inches.
Can always use paint but the cable harness looks good and probably adds some dampening.
BTW only the two middle shelves are mass loaded.
I used three rods/feet, but if would ever make another one I would use four. I do want correct some mistakes
I made some day, but that project is way down the list.
BTW that is a modified Lead Balloon under my TT (Sota Star Sapphire upgraded to Nova 23 years ago)
This is an old picture, equipment has changed a bit. Logitech Touch is gone replaced by RPi3 server and the preamp in
now a scratch build 6EW7 of Gary Dews design. The preamp pictured is now with Shashi being modded
