You could have a magnetic bearing, but magnetic levitation would have too many instabilities associated with it to work (the platter would wobble and would need the center of mass to be exactly on the axis you want the platter to rotate around). A magnetic or an air bearing might be a good idea.

Brombo is correct. However, if you have deep enough pockets there are already magnetic and air-pressure suspended turntables on the market.

Without a bearing/spindle, it is impossible.

Without a spindle, how is the platter centered? Floating a platter with magnets is probably fairly easy but it needs to be ABSOLUTELY centered at all times and that requires a spindle.

I think the real problem is going to be keeping the platter level. Tracking force is going to cause the platter to tilt it's axis, and the tilt will vary based on both tracking force & vary as the lever moment changes while the record is playing.

Centering should be do-able with creative use of magnetic field shape. It should certainly be possible to keep the centering tolerances smaller than the typical off-center hole in an album

I don't know, pretty much no records have exactly centered holes and some are way out of spec. Now imagine a magnetic setup responding to the off center record hole. Not pretty IMHO. Plus the whole VTF effecting how level the platter is.



But who knows maybe this can work and will revolutionize TT technology?
