It is not often that a new type of dynamic driver is introduced. This is one of those cases.

Unless I'm missing something, it's a driver & a passive radiator on the same basket. I've never heard a system with a passive radiator that did bass well, so I'm a bit skeptical...

Interesting. It's not a passive radiator, at least not in the conventional sense. I suppose the big question is how does it sound?

Concur with Roscoe, it is an annular passive radiator. If you design the system right, it will work to extend the response of the midrange driver, since it is a free resonant system that can be tuned via mass, stiffness of the air spring of the enclosure, and the damping. IF the "Q" is such that you get a broad resonant response, then it could work pretty well relative to the midrange.

How so?


I've never seen a passive radiator that was physically connected to the driven cone. I will admit I have not seen everything, so that may be where my confusion lies.

It is not physically connected, the inner surround is coupled to same hardpoint on the driver frame as outer surround of the midrange.

Exactly. Otherwise, it'd be old technology, used in the Altec Biflex speakers, and others....

The U.S. Patent office will probably patent anything if you follow the application rules that date back to the 19th century.

I recall Electro-Voice offering similar drivers as well as Jensen. This appears to be an old "pig" with a "fresh coat of lipstick."

If the patent office does not do their homework (due diligence) then this guy may get his patent -- but I believe it is a long shot because of the many first-use examples out there.

Now it is possible they can prove that their device is an improvement over previous patents (if they exist) and get a new patent. Pharmaceutical companies use this stategy to keep their drugs in the game denying generics the chance to usurp their high prices.
