Roon users: try this and report back

June 3rd, 2021, 10:13 am

Small experiment that takes about 5 seconds to try (not counting listening and logging).

Roon users: disable both "Background Audio Analysis Speed" and "On-Demand Audio Analysis Speed". These setting are found under "Settings" and "Library".

1. Listen and report what you hear?

2. If you logging power consumption and or CPU demand/temperature, report findings with the two setting disabled and with both settings enabled?

Spoiler alert! (don't read below if you want to try this without bias)

don't look below

almost there

1. Sound is generally clearer, more focused, vibrant.
2. With the two audio analysis settings enabled, I see hourly/daily fluctuations between 19.4v to 19.9v and .5A to .8A draw. With both Audio Analysis settings disabled, I see rock steady 19.1v and .4A to .5A draw.

I don't use roon, and I haven't looked at power consumption, but on one of my MPD based bridges if I'm just passing through data and not resampling, even at 24/192 CPU utilization is <2%, if it needs to resample the CPU utilization goes up to 15-20%

Yea, no resampling or DSP here. The settings allow Roon to analyze songs for crossfading, volume leveling, reporting dynamic range and a graphical representation of waveform. I don't use any of these things so I turned off the analysis.
