RCA holes in chassis

Post subject:  RCA holes in chassis
I have two al chassis which need holes for mounting RCA jacks. Could not find a definitive answer about the hole dia online.

What’s the hole size? Best method to make the holes?

It depends on the RCA connector, there is no standard mounting diameter.

I found that after-market RCA jacks are all over the place when it comes to dimensions. Buy your jacks. Use calipers to find the diameter. A step drill bit provides a nice clean hole for the diameter needed.

Mark the step that best matches the RCA diameter. You'll get a nice clean hole that accepts your RCAs just like factory production.

Even better, drill a somewhat undersize hole and file to correct size, and while you are at it make the hole the right shape to accommodate the various keying features that prevent an otherwise round jack from rotating in a round hole. Some jacks are flattened on one or two sides, and some have a distinct key protrusion.

I almost forgot. RCA jacks also come with isolating washers that require their own hole size so that the RCA jack is not tied (grounded) directly to the chassis itself if you wish the RCA to float above chassis ground so that it is grounded to the circuit only.

So you have two choices. Make the hole for the threaded jack itself -- or make the whole for the isolating washers.

I always use the insulating washer and then use a large buss wire to tie all the shells to the star ground in the equipment.
