Let’s say you start off with a pi network cap-inductor-cap. I understand if you drop the first cap you have a choke loaded ps but to get the same voltage out as with the pi network you have to increase the volts in. Why? |

Capacitors try to maintain a constant voltage. That means that a large enough capacitor will charge up to the peak of the transformer output, which is ~1.414 x transformer secondary voltage. Inductors try to maintain a constant current. That means that a large enough inductor will cause the subsequent capacitors to charge to the average of the AC sine wave voltage, which is ~0.9 x transformer secondary voltage. |
