You it's interesting that you asked. A relative came into the possession of a console Victrola that was in mint condition. Better in fact than the one displayed at Smithsonian.
He also had about 5,000 mint records to go with it. After dinner he demo'd the piece for me. WOW! It filled the room with music and it was strictly acoustical with a wind up mechanism. Sure it wasn't Hi-Fi as we now know it -- but impressive.

I have an 1899 vintage music box and a box of steel discs to play with it. This device creates music rather than reproducing it. Obviously, it can produce only one type of sound and no voice, but when you listen to it it becomes apparent that no speaker can reproduce sound with the transient depth that this device can generate.

It's not very DIY
My Garrard can play 78s, I even have the appropriate arm/cart to play them, and about 200 78s....

I bought that 3-speed, Bluetooth player for $34 at BJ's yesterday. It came with a cartridge too. Send it to Vanden Hull for rewiring? Call Rubicon for some custom Blackgates? The sound is a bit scratchy... ok... its very scratchy, no bass... well, its worth the $34

I have one of the floor model Vctrola Talking Machines. It's fun to play a record from time to time just to see where music reproduction came from.

I have a book that covers the recording process from day one. Before electronic recording artists would gather around in a tight group in front of a recording horn to cut a master for duplication. I guess you could say they were the first "direct-to-disc" recordings -- no pun intended.
