Can you have a tweeter facing upward with the woofer facing forward?

Shahinian is another brand that feature this arrangement.

I own a pair of Obelisks and very much enjoy them. They image fairly well and dependent on the room and placement can create a wide and deep soundstage. They are certainly not a speaker for everyone's taste. I've also owned Sonabs and pair of Eico HFS-2 but they have moved on to the homes of friends.

I wasn't seeking to get into the omni/poly directional speaker thing (or whatever ever each company's marketing department call it) on purpose. I just happened to stumble upon them in my travels.

Dipoles are essentially speakers pointing front and back
Think about a musical instrument. It radiates sound in all directions. There is nothing special about a speaker in a box with drivers pointing to the front
BTW those Larsens you showed in a picture has very little bass output.

Is Bose still a piece of crap?

I think bad mouthing Bose is unfair. The original 901’s when set up right actually sound3 pretty good. Bose made the marketing decision to go after the masses and leave the audio assholes behind. They were very successful in making money.

Bose 901's were based on bullshit physics. The recording was not make in an anechoic chamber. The recording had reflected sound inherent in it. You did not want to add more reflections. Also the base equalization would cause the driver excursion to be ridiculous at realistic base spl's.

Amar Bose taught at MIT and had his students develop speakers using the cheapest parts out there as part of the degree program. To make a long story short -- one of his students sued Bose for using his idea for a Bose product.

That said -- before any of this -- I got sucked into Bose 901s. I had a pair of KLH Model 5s for a couple of years. I traded the 5s in on a pair of 901s. After only two weeks living with the 901s details in music that I took for granted were missing along with the added hard glassy-edge that layered all types of music. I was disgusted and pissed off with a very bad case of buyer's remorse. The dealer already sold off the 5s so back went the 901s for an order of a new pair of KLH-5s.
