I had a Wharfedale 60 with the sand filled space between the inner and outer walls and the box was very solid. It was a 2 way with limited HF response. I added a tweeter to suppliment the 5" cone "tweeter" and changed the crossover but still not a great speaker.

My very first store-bought speakers were the Wharfdale W60Ds -- that was the model where they added a mid-range driver. A musician friend advised against getting them. He said they weren't musical. At the High Fidelity Show in D.C. they had WOW factor and I got sucked in. Yes -- they had sand-filled enclosures that were dead. But after living with them for a couple of years, even after mods (that's when I started with speaker mods) they were still "shouty" and edgy sounding. I then moved on to KLH Model 5s and lived happily for at least five years (no pun intended) until I got the itch for an upgrade.
