Woodworking for speakers

I talked to the woodworkers club. Through the club they have access to a numerically controlled router (8' x 10' bed). If you wind up making a stacked fabrication like Tomp using an nc router would greatly reduce the work. The router could cut the outside and inside of each part of the stack and drill precision locating holes for aligning the elements of the stack. Some nc routers (I don't know if the one available from my source could) could cut an appropriate angle on the inside of each element to really reduce the final finishing work.

Brombo, thank you. I will definitely talk to them about CNC. I am waiting for the measurements. I have some but converting to a product need more detailed measurements.I have no idea how a horn is made. I made a BR enclosure before which does not need much skills. This is not going to go well if I do it myself.

The reason I'm not farming it out to an NC router is that it will be for a magazine article to show people how to do it if youdon't have access to advanced machinery.

tomp I can't tell from the picture how big your horn is, but I have the feeling I would take a large (big swing) wood turning lathe to make, which most speaker builders would not have (of course they could join the woodworkers club and use the equipment they have).

This is not going to be a horn but two direct radiating drivers in an egg shaped enclosure. I'm including a photo of the egg portion of the old Mach 17 speaker that was the inspiration. Even with CNC machining you would still have to do two haves because the inside is hollow. I'll have a write up in AudioXpress later this year of the whole project. It is the most involved woodworking project I have ever done. Definitely not a novice project. I'm also including a photo of one of the "D" sections that stack up to make the egg.

I am looking for a woodworking shop to make speakers ( horns). Any recommendations or places you know which are reasonable?

You may want to post this question at the Lansing Heritage website. There are members there who make wood horns for JBL/Altec compression drivers. I'm sure they're pricey but if you need to farm it out....

Unless it is fabricated with Teak I doubt it.
