I always try to keep the radiation pattern of the sections of the speaker above the sub the same. Once you get to the sub the wavelengths at those frequencies are so long compared to most room dimensions it doesn't matter. I originally had my RD75s in a dipole arrangement with a mid bass array in a sealed box. It did not work well. Now my mid bass array (six 10" Peerless CC line woofers in a vertical array) is also dipole and the results are much better.
