With tons of help from the awesome folks on this forum and Audiokarma.org, I just finished my 1st tube amp build. It uses the transformers and tubes from a Heathkit AA-100, a Dynaco ST-70 driver board from Parks Audio, and a power supply PCB I made myself. I got the idea from a DIY builder named Tom McNally who did basically the same build 10 years ago.

I did a complete writeup here: http://bit.ly/st-40_amp. It just got posted on Hackaday!

I'm very happy with out the project turned out. Here are some photos:

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone here who helped me with this project! A special thanks to dberning who had me over to his place to check out some instability problems! It was so awesome of all of you folks to lend me your time and expertise. Here are all the DCAudioDIY threads I posted while working on the project:

Haha I probably should have mentioned that. I love the sound! :music-listening: but of course now I want new speakers. :D

ZOWIE!! That was your first???? NICE! Very nice!

I see it uses 7199 power tubes that fell out of favor in the distant past for reasons that escape me. They were designed from the start for audio amplifiers and used by Fisher and H.H. Scott to name but two manufacturers that come to mind.

Agree.
As far as I noted, if you don't overload the tube, pentaode sound amazing!

I think maybe you mean 7591s? It doesn't use 7199s.

Yes. Sorry -- 7591s. It's a shame they're not pin compatible with 6L6s.
