The Magnetar open baffle single planar speaker

The latest in the open baffle planar speaker design trials.

This is a single planar in an open L style baffle that covers 250Hz to 20KHz response to match up with the 12in open baffle servo subs. The specs for the driver are 20 ohm impedance with 103dB/1w/1m sensitivity. Response is very good with EQ and crossover. Using the new prototype dspNexus 2x8 DSP crossover system as the entire front end with phono RIAA EQ via the ADC's and sounds excellent.

Using the Orchard Audio Starkrimson GaN based Class D monoblocks with 18in of speaker cable to the planars for direct drive. The amp gain is matched to the requirements of the planar driver.

Time for some listening.

Looks amazing. Let us know how it sounds.

How much difference than what you showed at CAF a few years ago

The earlier prototype of the Magnetar baffle was considerably better than CAF2018, but after a crossover redesign of The Monoliths it was much better by AXPONA2019.

Still getting ready for listening session for this version. Just got the speakers setup, but now have to get the HAL MS-6 setup by it for a shorter USB cable. To far from my MS-5 in the room to run USB as it is more than 5 meters.

Should be this week for first listening.

Interestingly, I was just given a Conrad-Johnson Premiere Three preamp and Berning EA230 stereo PA by a friends father. Just sent an email to David Berning about getting the EA230 checked out. Fun stuff.

An early on axis frequency measurement of the Magnetar in the 3D printed open baffle before the final design in the earlier picture.

What makes it even more special is that it was the first real stereo system I ever heard. He played Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon on it with a pair of DCM Time Windows speakers. It was far past anything I thought possible for music reproduction.

Now to make is sing again after 40+ years with a new pair of speakers.

Also built some new open baffle H-Frame servo sub modules to go with the Magentar speakers. This lets me update the two 2x12 modules to 3x12 modules once these are painted.

These are flat pack kits from Reference North Audio that comes with dowels and bolts to build. You just need glue and clamps and I can do that.

When you are doing woodworking, clamps are like dollars. You can never have too many.
